Starting a “diet” can be frightening. It is associated with limiting foods, being hungry throughout the day, and a preconceived notion that the plan will probably not work. This is specifically why dieting fails more often than not. Even if you fight through it for a month or two, as soon as you give in and return to your old habits, the weight comes right back on.

Well, a diet does not have to be torture. If you approach it in the right way it can be an exciting time to change your eating habits for good, not just a temporary fix. The move toward a healthier life will lead you to have more energy and live a longer. And, who wouldn’t want that?

So, where to start? That is a tough question since motivation comes in many forms. Certain methods work well for some and completely different methods work better for others. Some like a structured calorie counting or carbohydrate reduction plan while others prefer a general “eat healthy” approach.

No matter what, a good rule of thumb is to start off with realistic goals, both short term and long term. Decide what you would like to accomplish on a daily basis, a weekly basis, and a monthly basis. Do you want to lose 2 pounds a week? Do you wish to gain more energy and feel less tired? Or, do you want to lower your cholesterol by a certain number of points? Be sure to apply numbers and time frames to whatever goals you can so you know exactly when they are reached. And, continue to evaluate your goals. If after the first few weeks you feel that you set a completely unrealistic goal, take a look at how you can adjust it to still challenge yourself but also make it attainable.

When deciding on goals, you also want to be sure to have a tracking method. This could be in the simple form of loose leaf paper, jotting down your thoughts and progress. Or, use the many online resources available for tracking goals. There are plenty of free calorie calculators and food or exercise journals on the web. These do a lot of the hard work for you. You can plan your meals out, search for the amount of calories, carbs, proteins, and fats found in the meals. The programs will then track what you consume on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. Set target amounts and see how you compare and progress over time.

A final thought to remember is once you reach your goals, do not give up. Continue to challenge yourself and make life changing adjustments to the food you eat and the fitness program you follow. Overtime, good habits will form and take over the bad habits that you used to have. You will be proud of your new self and want to continue on your journey of being healthy for life, not just starting a diet.
