The key of staying healthy is to choose unsaturated fat foods that supply good fatty acids like butter could be replaced with vegetable oils. It would be much healthy to substitute steak for salmon, which does not have trans-fat.

There are some people who opt for low-diet food and completely stop eating any type of fats. However, low diet foods have high level of carbohydrates and starch from refined food like white bread, potatoes, white rice and diet-free drinks, which could affect your body adversely.

It is found that food manufacturers swap fats with carbohydrates from whole grains, starch and sugar. When we eat such foods, our body digests the refined starch and carbohydrates very quickly, which apparently causes the insulin and blood sugar to rise and then fall. This is one of the reasons that you feel hungry soon and you tend to overeat, leading to weight gain.

This overeating can cause obesity, heart disease and diabetes. In other words, you can say that it is the saturated fats responsible for any of these diseases associated with weight gain. Therefore, by replacing your daily diet with proper amount of unsaturated fat foods, you can enjoy a healthy lifestyle.

Healthy tips on selecting foods:

1. Use plant based liquid oils for baking and cooking: Plant based oils including olive and canola as well as sesame and coconut are rich in unsaturated fats and they are healthy for the heart. Olive oil based with vinegar tastes very delicious, when it is used as a dressing on the salad or on roasted vegetables.

2. Abandon the trans-fat: When you are buying food products, it would be a good idea to carefully go through the label on it and check the whether it is trans free. You could buy any product that says trans-fat ’0′ (zero) on it label. Also look at the ingredients and make sure that there are no partially hydrogenated oils used.

Luckily, in 2006 the labeling law was passed, and since then most food producers have reduced the usage of trans-fats in their products. Now, all the food manufacturers are required to list the amount of trans fat on the Nutrition fact tag. In the past decade, blood level of trans fat has decreased to 58 % in America, which is a proof that the law of labeling has been very effective.

3. Opt for soft tub margarine: Instead of butter, select a product that has ’0′ gm of trans-fat plus no partially hydrogenated oils. You could use plant oil for making a spread instead of using butter. Olive oil is widely used to spread these days, as it tastes better.

4. Every day eat one food item having omega 3 fatty acid: Fatty fish, canola oil and walnuts are good source of omega 3 fats that are vital for the proper functioning of your body. Omega 3 fats from fish are considered to be favorable for a healthy heart.

5. Avoid red meat: The red meat like pork, beef and lamb as well as whole milk dairy items have high saturated fats. You could easily switch to unsaturated fat options like chicken, fish, beans and nuts instead of binging on red meat. If you cannot resists eating red meat, then opt for only lean cuts moderately.
